Bemis Junior High School Teacher

How long have you been a teacher?

I am starting my 32nd year as a Science teacher and my 20th year at Bemis Junior High.
How are you preparing for starting the school year?
Like so many of my colleagues, I have joined various education groups online where teachers from around the country are sharIng a wealth of information.  Taking online courses and participating in virtual conferences have also been very helpful.  Finally, Bemis Science department teachers have been in contact throughout the summer. We are working together to provide a great online experience.

What is something important you learned about yourself as a teacher during the shutdown?
I was surprised by how interactive teaching and learning could be online.  My students asked many questions and I could answer each of them almost immediately.  Before the shutdown, I would never have guessed that teaching online would be that way.
A few good tips for students: Your teacher is one click away.  If you have a question, all you need to do is send a message.  Also, sitting all of the time is not healthy. Get up and walk around or stand while you are using your computer.
What would you say to parents/students who may be disappointed about the start of the year being remote?
Being anxious and disappointed are very normal feelings given the circumstances we find ourselves in during this pandemic.  Teachers are feeling the same thing, but we ALL will get through this together as long as we support one another.  For now, the safety of each and every student and staff member comes first. As our nation gets this virus under control, one day we will return to class.  Believe me, every teacher I know is waiting for that day.
Anything else you think is important to share with families/the community about the new year?
It’s important to keep the lines of communication open now more than ever.  Parents, if we can’t answer your emailed questions, then we will put you in touch with someone who can help.  Students, your teachers will certainly give you helpful tips in order to have a successful learning experience online. Please follow their good advice!
